We Finally played Slay the Spire Board Game

Having 600 hours into the StS game on Steam, the boardgame version has long been on our wishlist here at WARPGaming. Well, it was restocked and the opportunity finally arose and we grabbed a copy!!

Slay the Spire is a rogue-like deck building card adventure game based on the award winning video game. We finally got our hands on a copy and dedicated ourselves to winning a run.

The board game has successfully translated pretty much every function of the game into a system that works really well on the table. At the beginning of each round, you draw your starting hand and also roll a dice - this prepares your turn in a way that you know which relics are active, which actions the enemies will take, and it lets you strategize and calculate your every move with your teammates.

Cards are almost identical to video game, but damage has been scaled down to like 1 hits, 2 hits etc instead of 6-7. Works a charm. And plenty of the enemies are still super challenging. Each player takes on their own row of enemies, with some enemies spawning more enemies (damn you, Byrds). Players can target any enemy in any row, but enemies in their row will always attack them.

Set up was overwhelming at first (you are required to sleeve ~300 cards) and as you can see the game needs a whole table of space. Once set up was out of the way, Neow gave us his blessing and sent us on our way.

@adamsofokleous played The Silent - the hunter and master of poison. With quick and silent strikes, he was dealing high damage with minimal energy spent. He also added in poison-dealing cards to help bleed out enemies.
@alejandro__.k played The Ironclad - strong, fearless with selfhealing at the end of every combat. Plenty of damage came from his cards.
@christophe.hadjigeorgiou played The Watcher - the most complex of all classes. His stance-shifting abilities gave him extra momentum in battle, dishing out huge damage and gaining LOTS of extra energy to spend.

The team made it all the way to the boss of Act II. On just our first run! 👏🏽

Our end comments are that this is a fantastic game, filled with adventure, suspense and a lot of collaboration. Being a tabletop rogue-like means it will provide true everlasting replayability and sure surprises in every single play.

Do you want to try it out? Comment below, and we can arrange a play session at Yonkai.
